Rebekah yawned and rapped lightly on Aileenâs door. It opened to reveal a bright-eyed Aileen with her hair pulled flawlessly up and her maidâs uniform starched and ironed.
âOh, I expected you to still be in bed after last night.â
âLast night?â Aileen blinked at her, a pleasing smile on her face.
Rebekah raised an eyebrow. âYou were rather sick, if I recall.â
âIâm feeling better, thank ye for asking.â Aileen pulled the door to her room shut. âNo need to mention it to anyone if ye please. But ye best hurry and finish dressing if ye donât want to be late to the kitchen.â
âLet me stop by my room for a minute, and we can head up to breakfast together.â Since sheâd thought Aileen would still be in bed retching, sheâd padded down the hall in her stocking feet as soon as sheâd pulled on her dress, leaving her apron, shoes, and dust cap all in her room.
âI canât imagine the family will be up with how late the Mellars stayed last night.â A fact she didnât want to think about. When sheâd gone to bed, everyone was still in the drawing room, Gilbert and Marianne seated far too close together on the settee.
She opened the door to her room and tromped inside.
âYe have a bolt?â From where she stood just inside the room, Aileenâs eyes flashed to the door and then back to her. âOn yer door?â
Rebekah shrugged and tied the apron behind her. âGilbert installed it.â
âDonât ye mean Mr. Sinclair?â Aileen snapped.
âYes, Mr. Sinclair,â she gritted, though calling him by his surname behind his back wasnât nearly as bad as saying it to his face.
âNone of the other servants have bolts.â
Rebekah pursed her lips together. âI didnât ask for one, if thatâs what youâre thinking.â
âBut he gave ye one all the same. That tells me enough.â
It didnât tell her anything, but Aileen flounced out the door before Rebekah could respond. Not that she would have come up with an explanation that put the other woman at ease. She huffed. After all sheâd done for Aileen last night, Aileen was probably headed upstairs to tell the mistress more lies about her and Gilbert.
So much for Gilbertâs notion about them becoming fast friends.
Except now Gilbert was probably too busy with Miss Mellar to notice whether they fought.
