Rebekah yawned and rapped lightly on Aileen’s door. It opened to reveal a bright-eyed Aileen with her hair pulled flawlessly up and her maid’s uniform starched and ironed.

“Oh, I expected you to still be in bed after last night.”

“Last night?” Aileen blinked at her, a pleasing smile on her face.

Rebekah raised an eyebrow. “You were rather sick, if I recall.”

“I’m feeling better, thank ye for asking.” Aileen pulled the door to her room shut. “No need to mention it to anyone if ye please. But ye best hurry and finish dressing if ye don’t want to be late to the kitchen.”

“Let me stop by my room for a minute, and we can head up to breakfast together.” Since she’d thought Aileen would still be in bed retching, she’d padded down the hall in her stocking feet as soon as she’d pulled on her dress, leaving her apron, shoes, and dust cap all in her room.

“I can’t imagine the family will be up with how late the Mellars stayed last night.” A fact she didn’t want to think about. When she’d gone to bed, everyone was still in the drawing room, Gilbert and Marianne seated far too close together on the settee.

She opened the door to her room and tromped inside.

“Ye have a bolt?” From where she stood just inside the room, Aileen’s eyes flashed to the door and then back to her. “On yer door?”

Rebekah shrugged and tied the apron behind her. “Gilbert installed it.”

“Don’t ye mean Mr. Sinclair?” Aileen snapped.

“Yes, Mr. Sinclair,” she gritted, though calling him by his surname behind his back wasn’t nearly as bad as saying it to his face.

“None of the other servants have bolts.”

Rebekah pursed her lips together. “I didn’t ask for one, if that’s what you’re thinking.”

“But he gave ye one all the same. That tells me enough.”

It didn’t tell her anything, but Aileen flounced out the door before Rebekah could respond. Not that she would have come up with an explanation that put the other woman at ease. She huffed. After all she’d done for Aileen last night, Aileen was probably headed upstairs to tell the mistress more lies about her and Gilbert.

So much for Gilbert’s notion about them becoming fast friends.

Except now Gilbert was probably too busy with Miss Mellar to notice whether they fought.
